How to Analyze Assetto Corsa Telemetry
Telemetry is a driver's most powerful tool for getting faster, but most don't know how to read it. Here's what to look at and what conclusions to draw.

Telemetry is the most powerful tool a driver has for getting faster. The problem is that most drivers don't know how to read it. A screen full of graphs and numbers can be intimidating, but once you understand what you're looking at, telemetry tells you exactly where you're losing time and why.
What telemetry is and why it matters
Telemetry is the real-time recording of all the car and driver data over a lap: speed, acceleration, braking, steering wheel position, tire pressures, brake temperatures and dozens of other parameters. In Formula 1, engineers analyze terabytes of data after every session. In sim racing, you have access to almost the same information.
The three metrics that matter most for improving
1. The braking point
The speed trace shows you exactly where you start braking before each corner. By comparing your lap with a fast reference lap, you can see whether you're braking too early (losing time on the straight) or too late (arriving with too much speed and having to run wide).
2. Apex speed
The slowest point of each corner is the apex. The speed you carry at that point determines how early you can accelerate afterwards. A faster apex isn't always better — sometimes it pays to enter slower so you can get on the power earlier and reach the next straight faster.
3. The throttle application point
When do you go flat out on the throttle after a corner? Too early and the car will oversteer or lose traction. Too late and you're leaving time on the table. Telemetry shows you exactly when you reach 100% throttle and whether the car is responding well or not.
Telemetry doesn't tell you what to do — it tells you what you're doing. The gap between the two is where the improvement lies.
Motorsport data analysis philosophy
Tools for analyzing telemetry in Assetto Corsa
- MoTeC i2 Pro: The professional standard. Powerful, but with a steep learning curve
- Assetto Corsa Competizione built-in: Enough to get started, shows the basic data
- CrewChief: Overlay with real-time data during the session
- SimHub: Customizable dashboards with all the car's data
The sector-by-sector comparison method
The most effective way to use telemetry is to compare your fastest lap with a reference lap, sector by sector. Don't try to improve everything at once — find the sector where you lose the most time and focus on that. Once you've improved it, move on to the next one. This systematic approach is the one professional engineers use.
